B.C. Black Histories

New and updated topics were added to the Social Studies 10 curriculum to support student learning about historical injustices, and further reflect the diversity and history of British Columbia (B.C.) and Canada. The topics introduced include the Holocaust, racial segregation and Hogan's Alley, and Japanese Canadian internment.

Based off feedback from teachers and education partners, there was a specific request for more resources and information to support teachers in delivering new content related to topics about Black Histories in B.C.

With a team of B.C. teachers from around the province, the ministry worked with educators to develop the BC Black Histories Teacher Guide (PDF). This guide aims to support teachers who may be unfamiliar with the topics of racial segregation and Hogan’s Alley by providing historical background information and virtual walking tour, instructional considerations, as well as resource and lesson activity suggestions.
